Dance of the Snakes

Finished my final draft of City of the Snakes today. This book has been more than 9 years in the making, while The City trilogy has been part of my life for 16 years — I started the first draft of Ayuamarca (later renamed Procession of the Dead) when I was 21!!! How does it feel to come to the end of a 16 year project? Well, I must admit, when I read through the final lines again (and, I’ve said here before, I think the last few chapters of this book, and particularly the final chapter, rank among my favourite extracts from any book I’ve ever written), I did get a bit of a nostalgic pang. It lasted all of… oh, I’d say about 20 seconds, give or take. Then I sighed, put it behind me, and tucked straight into the prep work for my final edit of The Thin Executioner. No time for resting on my laurels, or mushy feelings, in the world of Darren Shan!!! As always, I’m looking ahead, focusing on the next challenge, moving forward. Part of me hopes I’ll always be doing that, to my dying day — though another part of me would quite like to slow down one day, take a while to relax and look back and feel chuffed about what I’ve achieved. The trouble is, time out for me means less books for you guys — so I won’t mind if you all selfishly shout at me to keep on working as hard as I can — I know that’s what I’d do in your position — hell, it’s what I AM doing!!!!! I’ve said this before in interviews and at events — when you’re a writer, you work for yourself, and to do your best possible work, you need to be a real son of a bi@tch to work for!!!!!!!

Anyway, even though I looked forward and slid straight on to my next book in the afternoon, I was still feeling a little bit moody later in the day — it’s hard to just dismiss 16 years of your life with a shrug of your shoulders. So to cheer myself up, I looked at a couple of dance videos which Bas has put together. She makes these every year — they tickle her pink!!! This year, as well as herself and me, she’s added Goldie (our neighbour’s dog, who comes on walks with us) into the mix. If you want to have a chuckle at my expense, CLICK HERE or CLICK HERE — then hurry on ahead and create your own version, so that your friends can laugh at YOU too — it’s fun to make an ass of yourself in public every now and again!!!!!

Great blog Darren Shan. Finally done The City Trilogy, eh? Looking forward to The Thin Executioner and Cirq du Freak:The Vampire’s Assistant- I really enjoyed volume 3 of The Saga Of Darren Shan manga, with a great dose of action, sadness, heart warming moments and humour!!! I hope the English translation of the manga does not end as abruptly as the audio CDs. Please keep up what I view as good work by writing more soon please!!!!
