Five Days In

October 5, 2009 at 23:12 (1)

It’s the end of the fifth day, and everything has been going fabulously. I did a massive four hour signing at Ellesmere Port on Sunday!! It was actually nice and relaxed — it was my only event that day, so I was able to go at a nice, easy speed, chat with fans, take my time signing, etc. That night, I was even able to go for a proper dinner in my hotel with my publicist, Geraldine, rather than eat in the back of the car on the road!!!

Today, Monday, I did a huge school event in Bramhall in the morning, for over 600 students. I had a bit of a run-in with a librarian who was trying to cut down my speaking time — she wanted to have long introductions, and had arranged for a group of students to do a dance to the song, “Thriller”!!! Now, there are dozens of schools all up and down the UK which are pitching hard to try and get me, and they would happily give me all the time I need to do my talk — not slot me in around some dance routine which could be done on any school day of the year!!! When it became clear that the librarian wouldn’t discuss the situation, I just smiled, nodded, then cut in ahead of the intros and dance and did my normal routine regardless — sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns!!! It was a really fun event in the end, and they were even able to squeeze in the dancers once I had wound my talk down. Warning to librarians and teachers elsewhere — if you ever invite a writer (or any other guest) into your school, treat them with the respect they are entitled to and give them the time and space they need. OR ELSE!!!!!

I did a two hour signing at the fabulous Simply Books in Bramhall after that (which recently won the title of Best Independent Book Shop in the UK!!). Then it was straight on to Waterstones in Deansgate, where I did an enjoyable event for 120 fans and then signed for another two hours afterwards. Another busy, busy day — which is just the way I like it!!!!
